DLC Dark Smart Film
Privacy and real light control, from the same switch.
DLC — dyed liquid crystal — is switchable film that goes dark rather than white. Powered off, the panel is private and takes out most of the light coming through the glass — how much depends on the grade specified. Powered on, it becomes see-through again with a light black tint, closer to a tinted car window than to plain glass.
That combination is what separates it from ordinary privacy film. You are not only closing the sight line; you are taking most of the glare and a good share of the solar heat out of the room at the same time.
How it differs from PDLC — scattering versus absorbing
Both are liquid-crystal films and both switch the same way. The difference is what the off state does to the light, and it is a genuine difference in physics rather than a marketing one.
PDLC scatters. Its crystals sit at random angles when unpowered and bounce light in every direction, which destroys the view but lets most of the daylight through, simply diffused. That is why a frosted PDLC panel leaves a room bright.
DLC absorbs. Dye molecules are carried in the liquid crystal layer, so when the panel switches off the dye takes light out rather than merely scrambling it. That is the reason it reaches serious light blocking where PDLC reaches very little. It is supplied in grades, and the darker ones are dramatically more opaque than anything PDLC can manage.
The powered states differ too. PDLC goes fully clear. DLC returns to a tinted transparency rather than clear glass, so a light tint is always present.
Neither is better in the abstract. A bathroom you want bright and private is a PDLC room. A west-facing media room where the afternoon sun is the actual problem is a DLC room.
Supplied as retrofit film, which is often the point
We supply DLC as film applied to the interior face of glass you already own, rather than as a factory-laminated glass unit.
In a finished house that is an advantage rather than a limitation. Nothing is removed, no glass is replaced, no opening is disturbed, and the work can be done one room at a time as budget allows.
The existing glass does need to be in sound condition and reasonably flat for the film to sit properly. We check that on site before quoting rather than discovering it on installation day.
On and off, with nothing in between
DLC switches between its two states. There is no dial and no intermediate tint level — it is dark or it is tinted-clear.
Within that, everything else is available: wall switches, remote control, scheduling, zoning so separate panels switch independently, and integration into a whole-home system alongside your motorized shades.
Where it does its best work
Media rooms and television walls, where glare on a screen is the entire problem and a bright frosted panel would not help.
West and south-facing glass that overheats through the afternoon — stopping light at the window is more effective than managing it after it has entered the room.
Street-facing rooms on tight lots where you want privacy and relief from headlights and streetlights after dark.
Bedrooms, where the grade matters most — the darker specifications take a room genuinely dark, and we will show you measured figures rather than adjectives. Where light also arrives from other openings, pair it with blackout shades.
Common questions
- Is DLC blackout?
- It depends on the grade. DLC is supplied in several, and the darker specifications block the overwhelming majority of incoming light — enough to be a genuine blackout option rather than merely a dim one. We confirm measured figures for the grade we propose before you commit.
- Can I see out when it is switched on?
- Yes. It becomes see-through with a light black tint — similar to a lightly tinted window rather than fully clear glass.
- Can I set it halfway?
- No. DLC is on or off, with no intermediate levels. If you want graduated control over daylight, a motorized solar shade is the product that does that.
- Can it be applied to my existing windows?
- Yes — retrofit film is the only way DLC is supplied, so it is designed for exactly that. The glass needs to be sound and reasonably flat, which we confirm on survey.
- What does it look like when the power is off?
- Dark and private. That is also the state it defaults to in a power cut, so you lose the view rather than your privacy.
