Saxonburg was laid out in 1832 by John Roebling, who developed wire rope here before the suspension bridges that made his name. The Main Street that resulted is one of the better preserved nineteenth-century streetscapes in Butler County, and the housing around it is older than almost anything else we work on.
Newer building has gone up in the surrounding township, so the area asks for two quite different approaches depending on which side of it a house sits.

What we see in Saxonburg
In the older houses the openings are smaller, the sills are deep and the woodwork is usually original. The treatment belongs inside the reveal, where it leaves the joinery visible and does not add a second frame to a window that already has a good one.
Houses of this age are rarely square. Openings that are out of plumb by a quarter of an inch top to bottom are normal, and that is a measuring problem rather than a product problem — but it has to be found at the survey, not at the install.
Older houses are also where running cable is most disruptive, which is exactly where rechargeable lithium motors earn their place. Motorized shades become possible without opening up plaster that has been there since the nineteenth century.
On the newer construction in the township, the brief shifts to what we see across Butler County generally: more glass, open plan, and upper windows nobody can reach.
