Harmony is a few minutes from our Evans City showroom, and it is one of the more interesting places we work. The borough was founded by the Harmony Society in 1804 and its core is a National Historic Landmark District — which means a concentration of genuinely early housing that most of the region simply does not have.
Work in a house like that is as much about restraint as specification.
What we see in Harmony
Early nineteenth-century houses tend to have smaller openings, deep sills and original woodwork that should be visible rather than covered. An inside-mounted Roman shade sits within the reveal and lets the joinery do the framing; a wide outside-mount roller would hide the thing that makes the room worth looking at.
Where a property sits inside the historic district, exterior alterations can be subject to review. Interior window treatments generally are not — but it is worth raising with the borough before assuming, particularly for anything visible from the street.
Older glass is rarely square, and openings in a house nearly two centuries old are frequently out of plumb by a surprising margin. Every opening gets measured individually, which matters more here than in a house built in 2015.
